Zones of Regulation

Zones of Regulation use four colours to help us self-identify how they're feeling and can categorise our emotions based on colour.

The blue zone is used when we are feeling low. This could include feeling sad, sick, tired or bored. Although we may be feeling down but still in control.

The green zone is used to describe when we're in a calm state of alertness. We may feel calm, focused, happy and ready to learn.

The yellow zone describes when we have a heightened sense of alertness. This isn’t always a bad thing, and we typically still have some control when we’re in the yellow zone. This could include feeling nervous, anxious, frustrated, silly, excited or hyper.

The red zone describes an extremely heightened state of intense emotions. When we reach the red zone, we’re no longer in complete control of our emotions or reactions.

It is always important to note that we can move from zones to zones. There are some strategies we can do to help us.
Some include:
  • taking deep breaths in and out
  • talking to an adult
  • moving away and having some quiet time
  • being surrounded by family and friends

Can you think of other strategies you could do if you were in the  blue zone or in the red zone?
